Back to America’s range wars with this excellent detailed red and cream chess set that would be a great gift for anyone with an interest in the development of America in the early years. It’s the cowboy hats that really give this set it’s distinction – we love it. The kings are represented by a rancher, the queens by a saloon girl, the Bishops by a sheriff, the knights by a cowboy, the castles by a Boot Hill Tombstone and the pawns are cattle. It’s sculpted by George Pitman-Hooker, a West Somerset sculptor.
The range wars were a series of violent conflicts that took place in the American West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The conflicts were fought between cattle ranchers and sheepherders over control of the open range, or land that was freely used for grazing.
The cattle ranchers were angry that the sheepherders were overgrazing the land, which made it unsuitable for cattle. The sheepherders, on the other hand, accused the cattlemen of buying up water resources and fencing the range, which they regarded as public land.
The range wars were often bloody and destructive. There were many cases of cattle rustling, sheepherders being murdered, and entire sheep herds being slaughtered. The violence eventually led to the passage of the Taylor Grazing Act of 1934, which regulated grazing allotments on public land and helped to end the range wars.
